Most Drug Buyers Stay Close to Home

Median travel distances were approximately 0.7 miles for marijuana, 0.8 miles for cocaine, and 1.2 miles for heroin. As with burglary and many other offenses, illegal drug purchases generally occurred within the routine activity spaces surrounding where offenders lived.

Not All Buyers Travel the Same Distance
Although most buyers stayed relatively close to home, several characteristics consistently influenced travel distance.
Across all three drug types, white buyers traveled significantly farther than Black buyers. Depending on the drug, their journeys were between 33 and 42 percent longer after accounting for other variables. Buyers with more prior drug arrests also tended to travel farther, suggesting that experience with the criminal justice system may influence how people search for drug markets.
